Childhood lead poisoning remains a significant public health challenge in several regions of Nigeria, particularly in Zamfara State, where mining activities have contributed to environmental lead contamination. Lead exposure in children can lead to severe health problems, including developmental delays, learning disabilities, behavioral issues, and even death (Adegbola et al., 2023). The high prevalence of lead poisoning in Zamfara has raised concerns about the role healthcare professionals, especially nurses, can play in preventing and managing this condition.
Nurses are key in primary health care, and their role in preventing lead poisoning involves educating parents and communities, early detection, and providing preventive measures, such as promoting hygiene and reducing environmental exposure. Despite the significance of lead poisoning, there has been limited research on the specific role nurses play in addressing this issue in Zamfara State. This study aims to investigate the role of nurses in preventing childhood lead poisoning in the state and the effectiveness of their interventions.
Lead poisoning remains a significant cause of childhood morbidity and mortality in Zamfara State, with little attention given to the preventive role of nurses. Despite efforts by various stakeholders, the lack of targeted nursing interventions and awareness campaigns limits the progress in reducing lead poisoning cases. This study seeks to explore how nurses contribute to preventing lead poisoning in children, highlighting barriers and suggesting improvements to enhance their involvement in preventive care.
The study will focus on nurses working in primary health care centers and hospitals in Zamfara State, with data collected through interviews, surveys, and case studies of lead poisoning cases. Limitations include challenges in accessing remote mining areas and potential biases in self-reported data.
